Top 7 Best Pool Parties in Los Angeles in 2020

Nothing quite captures the summer season more than swimsuits, get togethers , rooftop bars and pool parties in Los Angeles (though outdoor adventures and ice cream take a close second). When it comes to Vegas-style pool parties and laid-back, rooftop gatherings, L.A.’s buzzy hotspots have enough lively events to keep you entertained all summer long.

The season events kick off with a splash of pool parties thrown at shindig-friendly hotels around town, from the heart of Hollywood to the rooftops of Downtown Los Angeles. If you’re looking to lounge (or dance) by the pool, enjoy great must and a cocktail in hand, be prepared to arrive early or grab a hotel room the night before, as most parties cap out at 500 people.

Of course, the fastest way to a coveted cabana or table space is via bottle service packages, which can run hundreds of dollars, but you’ll buy the best seat in the house. Book bottle service, buy tickets, and sign up for guest-list directly on Discotech’s free mobile app. Here are some of the best summer pool party options in LA:

W Hollywood

Overview of the pool party at W Hollywood hotel

A Free Entry Beverly Hills Rooftop Bar 2 Minutes from Rodeo Drive

Guests at the W head to the Wet Deck at 10am for a pool party where the boozy bashes collide with beautiful people, great tunes and an incredible view of the city. The best part? It’s completely free. Enjoy a cocktail by the bar or hang by the pool for a well-deserved post-workout treat. As for the rest of the weekend, top LA DJs will be spinning from 1pm to 5pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Though the Wet deck is primarily reserved for hotel guests, daybeds and cabanas can be reserved for non-guests with food and beverage spending minimums.

Skybar at Mondrian

The Mondrian hotel, West Hollywood’s luxury boutique getaway, is home to the ever-popular Skybar, a pool and bar that offers one of the best views in L.A. Let loose and lounge poolside at one of the top hotel pools in LA while DJs spin as you celebrate the weekend. Plus, be on the lookout for upcoming pool parties and celebs, as both elevate the pool side party experience to a new tier of fun and enjoyment.

The Standard, Downtown Los Angeles

A Pool Party in the Middle of Downtown LA Complete with Stunning Views

When looking to party or lounge poolside, very few LA pools compare to The Standard, Downtown Los Angeles. The pool comes complete with DJs, vibrating waterbeds and views on par with the best bars in LA. The rooftop pool bar can be a tough ticket on weekends for non-guests (must meet a $35 food and beverage minimum), but it’s totally worth it for a weekend day rager.

Tropicana Pool at the Roosevelt

Big pool at Roosevelt Hotel called Tropicana

A Historic Venue Home to Wild Pool Parties and the Celebs Who Frequent Them

If you’re looking to party poolside in the heart of Hollywood, the long standing Roosevelt hotel is your perfect go-to. After a 2003 restoration by designer Dodd Mitchell, this 1927 landmark once more welcomes the A-listers who frequented Tropicana during Hollywood’s heyday. Although a famous landmark, there is nothing outdated about a Tropicana pool party, as the crowds are young, the music is trendy and the party’s more alive than ever.

The Highlight Room

People partying at the Highlight Room pool party

Luxury and wild times collide together giving guests the ultimate pool party experience

The Highlight Room is found atop ten stories high with unobstructed, 360 degree views of Los Angeles, ranging from the famed Hollywood Sign and surrounding Hollywood Hills to the skyline of Downtown. By day, the modern sundeck offers hotel guests the perfect getaway to relax by the pool on a plush lounger or in a luxurious, private cabana. At sundown Thursday through Saturday, Highlight Room’s pool deck transforms into the best place to party under the stars in Los Angeles.

During the day through the summer, Highlight Room is just as fun. The Highlight Room is definitely one of the top pool parties in LA, as the vibe is luxurious but focuses on what’s really important, and that’s providing guests with an epic pool party.

Marina del Rey Hotel Pool

I’m sure you can do the math.

Liquid Frequencies Pool

A small Deep House pool party guaranteed to have you grooving all day and night long

For those looking for a more smaller pool party, this the spot for you. With a very limited capacity, it becomes hard to avoid being engulfed by crowds partying to the music. The music has historically been deep house, so it’s safe to assume groovy tunes await you at this pool party. If looking for a great time to party under the sun, this pool party surely won’t disappoint!

Bonus: Ace Hotel & Swim Club Palm Springs

Spacious view of Palm Springs Ace Hotel

Pool Parties and Super Warm Weather ALL THE TIME!? Ace Hotel in Palm Springs Gives You Both

While it’s a bit of a trek from L.A. to Palm Springs, the Ace Hotel’s buzzy pool parties make a weekend getaway well worth your while. The desert locale is home to the Swim Club, which hosts a variety of pool parties throughout summer. It’d be hard to find a better venue to kick off pool party season.

Prepare for a mix of DJs, live music, stand-up comedians, pool parties, R-rated bingo, arts & crafts and more. Be on the lookout for more daytime pool parties on the Ace Hotel’s event calendar, which are sure to roll out during the summer.

Best Clubs in Hollywood, Los Angeles

Times have changed, but the great times at these venues haven’t. As clubbing becomes more saught after by celebrities and influencers, Hollywood remains one of the top spots to go out. Here are some of the top trending clubs in Los Angeles Hollywood that we recommend checking out.

Looking for the hottest clubs in Hollywood, Los Angeles? See upcoming events sign up for guest list, and book table service directly on the free Discotech Mobile App. Or reach out to our help line directly at 4157356716 – we can help you pick a spot for your next night out in Hollywood.

Warwick

Part rustic cocktail lounge part Hollywood club, Warwick (formerly Club L), is a warehouse of exposed brick, fireplaces, and unfinished ceilings. Take the typical Hollywood club, but give it more of a rough, indie feel, and vastly upgrade the alcoholic options to seasonal craft cocktails made with better booze and quality ingredients. As one can see from the layout, it’s a space suited to table/bottle service, but in this case the bar program, and yes, there’s a “bar program,” is executed by top talent Jason Bran and Damian Windsor who have likely liquored you up in the past four years at The Roger Room.

The interior decor effortlessly creates the vibe of an exclusive and classy ballroom reserved for royalty, which makes sense since you’re most likely not going to be able to get in if you don’t opt for bottle service. However, don’t be mistaken. Warwick is an experience hard to forget.

Entry is at the doorman’s discretion. To guarantee admission, we highly recommend bottle service at Warwick.

Protip – Warwick wednesdays is one of the hottest parties in LA. Other upcoming events at Warwick.

Avalon

Avalon since the 1920’s has been one of the biggest hotspots in Hollywood, hosting headliners such as the Beatles and Soundgarden. This historic venue underwent some changes in 2003, as the club had a major makeover that turned the space into a DJ-driven dance club hotspot. Big names continue to shake the cavernous hall, but the emphasis has shifted to electronic compososions. On most weekends you’ll find more underground DJs on the decks spinning tunes early into the morning. Bardot, a lounge above Avalon stays open for the after party on Friday night / Saturday morning until 6-7 AM. Browse Upcoming events at Avalon and get on the discounted guest list!

Regardless of the evening’s agenda, lines form deep in front of the Spanish Colonial façade, with patrons ranging from mini-dress beauties to shaggy rave kids itching to sweat their sneakers off.

A pair of long bars flank the room, as well as small cylindrical tables and white couches for the bottle service crowd. Those looking to escape the revelry can head to the open balcony, home to VIP lounges, a third bar, and bird’s-eye views of the broiling masses below. Funky hipsters and celebrities often venture to Bardot, the club’s sister lounge upstairs.

Nothing beats Avalon when looking to experience for some of the best nu-electro, techno, and house music in LA. Avalon Hollywood recently completed a million dollar renovation of the club which included brand new lighting and sound systems. This place is a must-see.

Academy

Academy LA is one of the most fun and versatile clubs in Hollywood. Hosted by Insomniac, (the creators of the rave-tastic Wonderland and Electronic Daisy Carnival festivals) Academy LA books both emerging DJ talent and high-profile EDM artists. If the club looks familiar to you, its because it was formerly Create (and before that Vanguard) before becoming Academy.

The three-room, 20,000 square foot space features an epic soundsystem and Hollywood’s largest LED wall. I will repeat that again. Hollywood’s LARGEST LED wall. Words are not enough to describe the unbelievable experience one will have attending this venue. For those looking to downshift and desensitize, one can casually hang out on a tree-lined patio illuminated by simple strands of party lights.

Though this major production of a club may not seem like the type to forgo bottle service at private tables, the fantastic layout of the club makes it not only a great place to pop bottles in booths, but a bonafide space to sweat it out to EDM festival trance and house headliners.

Academy has a guest list, tickets for purchase and tables for reservation. See who’s spinning and get on the guestlist – upcoming Events at Academy LA

Playhouse

This celebrity-friendly luxury club with eclectic DJs, comes equipped with a vast dance floor & a exciting party atmosphere. Playhouse according to their website was voted #4 Best Nightclub in the world. We are not here to play favorites or decide who is number one, but Playhouse is undeniably a current top tier club. Playhouse is a modern ode to stylish escapism in heart of Hollywood. The versatile design creates the ultimate entertainment playground for adults.

Located in the long-abandoned building that once housed the Fox Theatre, Playhouse Hollywood is a sprawling, 13,000-square-foot Vegas-style nightclub with a sexy circus theme. Popular with eager young club kids and college students, the impressive high-ceilinged space is dominated by a huge oval bar presided over by scantily-clad bartenders who, when not slinging drinks, leap onto trapezes for some aerial acrobatics or regale the crowd with a provocative burlesque show in the elevated cages. It doesn’t get any better then dancing to bangers while watching a free burlesque show.

High rollers can make their way to the elegant VIP lounge upstairs, which features numerous gold and black banquettes, a second bar and DJ, and a slightly mellower vibe. A whirlwind combination of high design, circus visuals, and great performances, Playhouse offers three-ring bedlam that die-hard club fans won’t want to miss.

General Admission at Playhouse is $20-$40 depending on how busy the night is. Book a table or get on the guest list at Playhouse.

Argyle

Housed in the former space of Tru nightclub, the Argyle is a lounge-club combo new to the scene in Hollywood. The main entrance leads down a flight of stairs into an area with comfy couches and the look of a library. This is what management likes to refer to as the cocktail den. “Downstairs in the craft cocktail lounge, you can take a breather and actually talk to the person you’re with,” says Travis Bass of the Tru Hospitality group. “We wanted a 1920s speakeasy down here, but upscale in London or Paris with no Prohibition.”

The venue’s side entrance on Selma Avenue leads upstairs to the nightclub, where there is a dance floor, fancy lighting and the only two-story VIP booth in all of Los Angeles. The Argyle’s website describes the club as “a champagne jam where high art, high fashion, and high times mingle on the dance floor and the DJ is only as important as the next song.

Argyle does not do walk ups. You will have to know a promoter or reserve a table.

Upcoming Events at Argyle

Sound Nightclub

Sound Nightclub is THE bastion of deep house / underground electronic music in LA. It’s a small, intimate venue with a one-of-a-kind Pioneer sound system that will rock your socks. The venue has a raw and industrial look with lots of California redwood furniture and walls and offers a fairly spacious dance floor located right in front of the DJs perch as well as bottle service for those high rollers.

As suggested in the name, the venue boasts a unique and cutting edge sound system and a killer A/V system, so the visual elements are as stimulating as the unbelievable audio. This is a great place to go in Hollywood that actually books talents who play good deep house and more minimal/artful house rather than your typical top 40 hits and popular house music bangers.

Space Yacht on Tuesdays mostly features bass heavy lineups and has garnered one of the fastest growing followings in the bass music scene. Framework Fridays are about underground deep house and techno music and the people who live for it.

Sound Presents mainly features house music. On occasion Sound will host some well known DJs (Kaskade, Afrojack, Markus Schulz, etc) but more often than not you’ll get the likes of Guy Gerber, Seth Troxler, EDX, Digweed, etc. See who’s spinning at Sound Nightclub! This is one of our favorite clubs in LA!

1 OAK LA

The Argyle

Bootsy Bellows

Elevate Lounge

Hyde Sunset Lounge

Warwick

Most Exclusive Upscale Nightclubs in Los Angeles

These exclusive Los Angeles nightclubs are not for the faint of heart. Packed full nearly every night of the week with local scenesters, beautiful trust fund babies and Los Angeles’ elites, there’s even a good chance that you run into a celebrity grinding on the dance floor, or catch an artist dropping in for a quick performance. All in a night’s work for places where the ultra expensive table minimum start in the thousands. Have your status and cash at the ready to get past the doorman at these night-time playgrounds of the rich and the famous – you’ll be rubbing shoulders with the most well heeled selection of LA high society, and they like to party hard. Most of these upscale venues do not do general admission – admission for ladies is at the door’s discretion, admission for guys requires bottle service. These are the most expensive nightclubs in LA:

Warwick

Part rustic cocktail lounge part Hollywood club, Warwick (formerly Club L), a warehouse of exposed brick, fireplaces, and unfinished ceilings, opens October 5. The idea here is a simple one, but not always easy to execute.

While one can always order a drink from the venue’s multiple bars, here’s how tableside cocktail service will work. Those who reserve a table score a personal cocktail attendant to make drinks throughout the night. A table might come with a choice spirit, fresh squeezed juice, housemade syrup or bitters, seasonal garnishes, housemade “foams,” and depending on the drink, fancy ice like this.

Hollywood // 10 PM – 2 AM // Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat

Avenue

It’s not every day that a hot new club opens in Hollywood, but the Tao Group brings one of their most reliable nightlife concepts, Avenue, to the heart of Tinseltown starting tomorrow evening. A celebrity-riddled place in New York City, the Hollywood outlet is sure to bring in the same kind of A-list clientele as the Manhattan original, with a David Rockwell-designed space that spans a mere 4,000 square feet just outside the new Dream Hotel project.

Not massive, but just enough room to unleash some unabashed revelry. The place looks like a “grand estate frozen in time,” with plenty of custom design points and a lounge-style seating array. Expect world-class DJs spinning beats while the drink offerings are classic club-style booze: bottles and easy mixers. And when you get hungry, just pop over to Alvin Cailan’s pizza joint, Luchini, for slices and more. Tao, Beauty & Essex, and rooftop pool bar The Highlight Room will join Avenue for a NYC-style free for all in Hollywood.

Hollywood // 10 PM – 2AM // Tues, Fri, Sat

Nightingale Plaza

Nightingale Plaza is sbe’s latest nightclub concept located in the former Greystone Manor space, which is being reimagined as an avant-garde, nightclub named after Hollywood’s after-party-rich Bird Streets.

The entrance leads to an elegant lounge with surreal wallpaper strewn with phantom limbs, flowers with eyes and the occasional extraterrestrial dinosaur. sbe enlisted the renowned Rockwell Group for the design. Inside, guests can lounge, dine, or dance in four distinct environments. Between a sculpted fire place, mid-century banquettes and the state-of-the-art kinetic ceiling covered in 15 folding mirrored panels over the dance floor, there is something for everyone. The ceiling starts in a closed position and over the course of the evening, as the energy builds, the mirrored planes gradually unfold revealing a digital light show above creating a dramatic reflective landscape.

The most Instagrammable feature is the Rockwell Group-designed wallpaper, inspired by exotic foliage and magical surrealism. Plus, there’s a photo booth, lined in the wallpaper, that can easily fit eight-plus people. But have a game plan upon entering, because mastering the boomerang-like gif setup can take a minute. It’s only a matter of time before Nightingale gains mention in a hip-hop song, just like Drake and the Game did for its predecessor, Greystone Manor.

West Hollywood // 10 PM – 2 AM // Wed, Sat, Sun

Bootsy Bellows

Get a taste of tinseltown at Bootsy Bellows in WeHo, an original nighclub by David Arquette and the H.Wood group (Santa Monica’s Shore Bar). The ultimate LA hotspot boasts plush banquettes to lounge, while sipping specialty cocktails and taking in the a-list clientele. Hang out for live performances, burlesque shows, wild costume parties and dinner theatre spectacles. Snap a candid in the photo booth and capture one of the wildest parties the West has to offer.

West Hollywood // 10 PM – 2 AM // Tues, Fri, Sat

Villa Lounge

What is it, exactly, that keeps stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Kanye West, Demi Moore, Javier Bardem and even 70-year-old Dustin Hoffman (his son DJs there) coming back to Villa night after night despite the near-constant presence of paparazzi?

It starts with the design.

“There’s sort of an overtone of a bordello,” says Villa’s lead designer and architect, Lionel Ohayon, of the bar. “The general idea is that it’s a residential house . . . but an eccentric Hollywood Hills home. Things seem very familiar, but a little off-center at the same time.”

Which brings us back to the concept of creating a club that feels like someone’s (slightly bawdy) home. “You have to know someone in order to come in,” says the lounge’s owner, former SBE heavyweight Reza Roohi.

The best person to know at Villa? Roohi himself.

“I just created a ‘Villa black card,’ ” he says of the radio-frequency identification VIP cards that will go into operation in the next few weeks. “Certain clients, people like Michael Bay, will get these. If the door guy doesn’t recognize you when you pull up at valet, it will send a [radio] signal to a hand-held device with the door man, with the customer’s picture and vital stats.”

Such is one of the most exclusive spots in LA.

West Hollywood // 10 PM – 2 AM // Tues & Fri

Hyde Sunset

Meet Hyde Sunset Kitchen + Cocktails, the huger, patio-wrapped-restaurant reincarnation of SBE’s infamous celebrity hideout, now with former Whist/41 Ocean chef Chris Crary in the kitchen—opening Sunday at the old XIV space in West Hollywood.

It looks like a great dinner-date spot in here. A moody room of raw woods, Eastern carpets and hanging metal sprockets that all cultivate a breezy, arty Beachwood Canyon cabin vibe. For, well, a this-section-of-Sunset crowd.

But your ultimate aim is a rustic wooden table out on the patio, under trees and a graffiti-scrawled mural by the wood-burning fireplace. That’s what industry experts call a clincher. Then comes the fried-chicken-and-kimchi buttermilk-biscuit sliders, sambuca mussels, a ribeye and, if the occasion requires, a four-pound lobster.

Soon, they’ll open the lounge back near the entrance, full of the old bottle-service shenanigans.

West Hollywood // 10:30 PM – 2 AM // Thurs, Fri, Sat

Highlight Room

The Dream Hollywood’s final concept is here, and boy it’s beauty. The Highlight Room takes over the rooftop and poolside at the mod hotel, which officially opens tonight with some of the sweetest views in Hollywood. With clear cut vistas looking out to Hollywood and beyond, it’s clearly outfitted to become an evening party space, what with speakers galore, two DJ booths, and bottle service.

The far corner of the rooftop contains a decent number of dinner tables, where they’ll have full service. Think hamachi crudo, lobster toast, chopped chicken salad, and grilled prawns, with some amazing views to boot.

The southern stretch of the space feels more like a nightclub, with low-flung tables and and pricey cocktails (Ace of Spade bottles run a cool $1K, for the ballers out there). Revelers looking to relax by the pool, which takes the center of the rooftop, could sip on a boozy watermelon lemonade while taking bites of wagyu sliders and pea hummus. Cabanas require reservations, and the entire roof is only available to hotel guests during the day. Best Rooftop Bars in Los Angeles – Hollywood, Beverly Hills, DTLA, Weho

What is it that they say about smog? Oh yeah, beautiful sunsets. Make L.A.’s haze work for you at these cocktail bars and beachside spots, where the views rightfully rival the booze. Rooftop bars is a nice break from LA’s epic nightclubs and there’s plenty of them to choose from. From Downtown’s bars with a view to seaside cabanas in Malibu and Venice, here are the city’s top (literally) rooftop bars.

Highlight Room – Hollywood

The Highlight Room takes over the rooftop and poolside at the mod hotel, which officially opens tonight with some of the sweetest views in Hollywood. With clear cut vistas looking out to Hollywood and beyond, it’s clearly outfitted to become an evening party space, what with speakers galore, two DJ booths, and bottle service.

The Roof on Wilshire – Central LA

From weekend brunch—tuck into pancake lasagna as you sip on mimosas—to sunset drinks and bites, you’ll find full views paired with staycation cocktails and eats at the Hotel Wilshire’s rooftop restaurant and lounge. As nights get cooler, slip into one of the banquettes that line the pool and warm up with drinks like the Cue Southside, with gin, cucumber and mint; or El Ristocrat, with tequila, agave and bitters.

Perch LA – Downtown LA

This rooftop bistro is one of the prettiest in town with its patterned tile floors, dead-on view of the Central Library and potted trees full of twinkly lights. Downtown locals, plus a few hundred of their closest friends, sit on velour bar stools and plush sofas inside the eclectic boudoir-themed bar or fireside on the outdoor patio. From any seat, you’ll want to sample the wide selection of Kirs that go beyond Crème de Cassis—try a tasty, blackberry-flavored Crème de Mure—and other French by-the-glass pours. The after-work crowd drops in for happy hour, dubbed Apéritif Hour, weekdays from 4 to 6pm, while late-night partygoers can enjoy a live DJ on Tuesdays from 9pm-2am.

Petit Ermitage – West Hollywood

Just off the hustle and bustle of the Sunset Strip, this West Hollywood boutique gem boasts boho-chic rooms with European touches and overwhelming charm. Take in the 360° vistas of Los Angeles from the rooftop (often overlooked by locals as a relaxing hangout spot), complete with outdoor pool, fireplaces, two bars, patio and garden, recognized as a hummingbird and butterfly sanctuary by the National Wildlife Federation.

High Rooftop Lounge – Venice

Beachside rooftops are in surprisingly short supply in L.A., making the Hotel Erwin’s High Rooftop Lounge an in-demand spot for sun-kissed Venice Beach locals. Even if you’re staying at the hotel, be sure to make a reservation. There’s nothing like a multi-hued sunset over the Pacific with a cocktail in hand to get Angelenos buzzing. Getting chilly? Evening bar-goers can stay past sundown wrapped up in one of the bar’s cozy blankets, along with a spiked cocoa or hot root beer float. If you don’t like your drinks sweet, stick to local craft brews to pair with midnight (gourmet) munchies like the mini lobster roll and a bacon, cream cheese, jalapeño hot dog.

E.P. L.P. Rooftop Bar – West Hollywood

There’s a party happening at the intersection of La Cienega and Melrose—and while everyone is invited, not everyone may fit in. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give L.P. Rooftop a try, though. Located above E.P., a restaurant featuring a hodgepodge of Asian cuisine, you’ll find L.P., a rooftop bar with killer views and a swanky clientele. Share a pitcher of spiked bubble tea and Fijian nachos with new friends or industry colleagues as the sun sets on West Hollywood. If you’re lucky, you might be able to get into the super exclusive patch of rooftop known as Frankie’s, a private bar with daybeds.

Standard Downtown – DTLA

Even if you don’t hop in the pool, you can still plunge into the fun on one of the bright red waterbed pods scattered across the roof at the Downtown outpost of Andre Balaz’s hip hotel. Take the elevator up to the top, where mod furnishings give a slightly space-age vibe—the perfect backdrop for a crowd ranging from folks waiting for next year’s Burning Man to hotel guests checking out the scene. Weekend afternoons call for cocktail lounging—try the sweet and sour Hennessy Lemonade—but beware the $20 cover after 7pm, which doesn’t deter the lines that can stretch out into the parking lot.

Mama Shelter – Hollywood

We’re big fans of Mama Shelter as a hotel and a restaurant, but once we saw the rooftop, we decided we just might move in for good. The bright space is splattered with multicolored sofas and chairs where you can lounge while waiting for shawarma to arrive; the Mediterranean-inspired menu also serves falafel, salmon skewers and a few hummus options. Cocktails also pay tribute to the Mediterranean, with drinks like the Za’atar Margarita and Mediterranean Mule. On warm nights, you can dance under the stars while DJs spin an eclectic mix of music, or take in a classic movie on their outdoor screen. There’s also a fusbol table, a yoga studio and sweeping views of Hollywood. Like we said—we’re never leaving.

Upstairs – DTLA

Look good—but not like you’re trying too hard—when visiting Upstairs, a Moroccan oasis perched atop the trendy Ace Hotel. The elevator next to L.A. Chapter is your key to getting inside (or rather, outside) the buzzing, open-air roof deck, swathed in an exotic canopy and scattered with hip Downtowners clutching plastic cups. Perfect for an after-work schmooze or a reunion with old friends, you’ll find two bars to order a drink from (be warned: weekends bring the requisite long lines). Try the Lefty Lucy, a surprisingly easy-to-drink concoction made with chile liqueur, peach liqueur, ginger, lime and yellow chartreuse.

SkyBar – WeHo

The rooftop bar that started it all, the Mondrian’s Skybar still retains its secret Sunset Strip entryway, complete with dress-to-impress entry and nightlife cred—this is one of the rare poolside bars where people really do jump in after a night of cocktails. The all-ages crowd ranges from wide-eyed ingénues to aging Robert Evans types, but no matter where you fall on the spectrum, the Mexican-style oasis of flowering walls and gorgeous nooks will win you over, especially with a mojito in hand.

Above SIXTY Beverly Hills – Beverly Hills

Above SIXTY provides both a name and directions to this exclusive hotel bar. Open to Sixty Beverly Hills guests, members and cabana reservations during the day, this ritzy rooftop lounge is open to the public for a swanky bar crowd at night. The rooftop lounge offers wine, beer and cocktails, like the Strawberry Smash crafted with vodka and fresh muddled strawberries. Appetizers and meals, from kale salads to crab cakes, are also available on the roof of the sleek hotel, as are occasional weekend pool parties. You’ll pay a pretty penny for your libations, but it’s worth it for the view.

The Fonda Theatre – Hollywood

A smoke break doesn’t mean that you’ll miss the show at Hollywood’s Fonda Theatre, where not only is the music hooked up to the rooftop “speakeasy,” but the live on-stage performance is also projected on the exterior wall. Unfortunately, you do have to buy tickets to the gig to gain entrance, but the prime perch—lounge on one of the scattered sofas on the outdoor patio—from the historic Spanish Revival–style building offers an unobstructed view of Hollywood as you listen to indie faves like Alt-J and the Alabama Shakes. Throw back a brewski and gaze down the boulevard as you channel your inner Dracula, performed on the Fonda stage soon after it opened in 1926.

Moonshadows – Malibu

Forget flip-flops and sunscreen—dolphin sightings are de rigueur at this longtime PCH watering hole. With an outdoor lounge area lined with white beds and curtained booths that hang right over the Pacific, you’re practically within blowhole distance of the pods that swim close to shore. Catch afternoon rays at weekend brunch or laze on the sundeck at sunset or after dark, when Malibu locals turn out for margaritas and the salt air mixes with pretty young things.

The Highlight Room at the Dream Hotel Set to Open Next Week

Cabanas require table service reservations, and the entire roof is only available to hotel guests during the day. Starting at 6 p.m. on weekdays, things open up to the public, except on weekends when the rooftop opens at 1 p.m. for everyone.
