Space Ibiza is now reopen as Freq.
It’s a recent cold night in Hell’s Kitchen, with winds rolling off the Hudson River. But on the dance floor of Space Ibiza New York, on West 50th Street, things are getting sweaty. House music blasts through speakers, and undulating bodies push toward the elevated DJ booth where tattooed DJ Victor Calderone holds court. Aerialists hang from hoops overhead, little people scoot around on tricycles, and, oh yeah, you can’t miss the puffy-haired guy prancing in his glow-in-the-dark suit.
When 4 a.m. strikes, and most clubs close, staffers at Space have been known to sweep bottles from the tables, shut down the bar service — and then keep the party going. Four hours later, at 8 a.m., the booze returns and things kick up to a whole new level.
Midtown’s newest hot spot is the first North American spinoff of the hugely popular Spanish club, which has been around since 1989 and has been named best global club at the International Dance Music Awards four times — most recently in 2013.
Calderone, a regular DJ at the club who travels the circuit from Ibiza to Montreal to Miami, digs the Euro vibe at Space.
“It has a similar feeling to Ibiza; for DJs, the energy is very similar,” he says. “You build your set over a period of time, and the people are there to be taken on a journey. Then the real music-heads show up at 6 a.m., and a transfer of energy takes place. I enjoy playing marathon sets. Late last year, I went for 11 hours and felt great at the end!”
In some ways, with its large dance floor, no-nonsense décor and sporadic blasts of underground-techno house music, the club feels like a bit of a throwback to the glory days of 1980s and ’90s New York, when clubs like Sound Factory and Twilo ruled.
